Wait a minute...am I the first one to mention A Clockwork Orange? That was ingenious. I dare you to listen to "I Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper" and not get it trapped in your brain for the next week.

Also, honourable mentions to Tom Waits' "Big Time". Do concept/concert movies count?

Here's a list of my top 5 favorites. I'm only including soundtracks that have been made specifically for the movie ( or as in the case of SNF, mostly for the movie). Therefore I'm negating soundtrax like Pulp Fiction which is made up of songs that were pre-written.
Dawg.

5. Streets Of Fire - A guilty pleasure, I must admit.

4. Juno - Yeah, I really do like this soundtrack. So, y'know.....
shut up.

3. The Graduate - I've only had one time in my life where an older lady tried to seduce me ( unsuccesfully, I might add). Unfortunately, it was late one night offa North Ave., near downtown Chicago. And I think that she expected either money or drugs in exchange.
At least, I think it was a she. The darkness of the night combined with "her" facial hair really prevented me from making a fair assesment.

2. Saturday Night Fever - You can tell by the way that I use my walk that I'm a woman's man.
No, seriously..... you can.

1. Purple Rain - Y'know, I've been to alot hotels in my time, & I have yet to walk into a lobby that has a girl masturbating with a magazine. Or with my luck, maybe I have, but didn't get there until after security threw her out.

My personal favourite is the soundtrack to Bis ans Ende der Weldt -- Until The End Of The World, in English. It's host to a wonderful, all-star group of classic "alternative" artists, all but one of them writing a song specifically for the film, imagining how they might sound at the turn of the century, almost ten years in the future. Some got it right, some got it wrong, almost everyone contributed incredibly interesting work.

Interspersed with some great electronically influenced classical score cues from Graeme Revell, it makes for an awesomely compelling listen. I love it to pieces.

The best movie soundtrack I think is the Across the Universe Soundtrack. All of the remakes of the Beatles songs turned out to be pretty amazing!

Aaah dammit, everyone beat me to it!

Bladerunner Vangelis' soundtrack is great.

See also -

Judgement Night - A great representation of rap metal before morons like Limp Bizkit went and spoiled it for everyone.

Rocky Horror Picture Show - Can't argue with that one!

The Empire Strikes Back - So what if John Williams ripped off Holst? It's cheesey, but very effective.

Jaws - Once again Williams rips the piss out of another composer. This time it's Stravinsky, but it works so well! 'Tourists on the Menu' is great too.

I could go on forever with this topic. Maybe I'll post more soon.

None more Black

I don't post on this thread because of my limited music background though I do periodically pay attention to the music and soundtrack of movies. But I did want to respond to Duncan Black's selection of Blade Runner and Rocky Horror Picture Show as being memorable soundtracks that I appreciate. The whole story behind the making of Blade Runner itself as well as Vangelis's music is fascinating. According to Paul M. Sammon (1996), it took twelve years after the movie release that the movie's soundtrack was put on the market, while another movie soundtrack was released that didn't even include Vangelis's music!

I remember that one. If memory serves, it was like one of those old Pickwick albums where the soundtrack was re-recorded with different musicians.

I have a similar album of the 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' soundtrack, recorded by Neil Norman and his Cosmic Orchestra. The main theme is a comedy gem as it is recorded in a 70s funk style - similar to Starsky and Hutch and Shaft. However, it is massively entertaining for all the wrong reasons!

Bladerunner had so many problems with copyright and ownership. In the UK, it was almost impossible to buy the film at retail outlets for absolutley ages. The soundtrack album suffered in a similar manner it would seem.

In terms of a soundtrack that really captures the spirit of the movie, Star Wars, The Big Chill and Rocky I are tremendous. For just some good tunes I loved "Pretty in Pink," "Across the Universe," and one that tends to get overlooked "That Thing You Do."

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

That thing you do is a great movie as well. One of my favorite songs is little wild one.
