Uhh... read and learn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaphor

First of all that is Wikipedia the most untrustable encyclopedia around.

Second of all, the article is about "Metaphors" not "Mountains".

Yeah, You're smarter than me? Funny.

...Okay now I know you've gotta be a joke poster. Big Grin

Ok I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree

Sigh.. I guess I better add anyway:

If you really are this dense, I was using mountains as a metaphor. You know, as in "mountains of scientific evidence"? Not literal mountains, for god's sake. Are you familiar with the concept of metaphor? Maybe we should start by educating you on the english language, and we'll get to science waaaay down the line.

16? What the hell kind of excuse is that? Maybe I'd let you off if you were 8.
I'm 25, but I sure as hell knew what a metaphor was by the time I was in the 10th grade.

Why not open a goddamn book before you try to argue stuff like this, instead of getting all your ideas from an absurd propaganda film.

Actually, that is rather depressing. It simply proves that the religious right is still brainwashing their children and that regardless of how much the scientific world moves forward, people like your parents will always be holding back our society.

Evolution is as questionable as is gravity, kid. We can only show you the water, man, but we can't prove you have a mouth, sorry.

So maybe, think about what it is you have been fed since you were born, don't believe us, think for yourself, that's all I ask. Otherwise the future of the world which you and I (20) will inherit is very glum.

You know what? Ive had it with arguing with you. You're a stuck up, stupid idiot who probably lives in his mom's basement. You know what? You can go ahead and believe this lie, whatever. Oh and I do know what a metaphor is I just misunderstood your post. So let that sink in and have a nice life.

I assure you, I didn't consider a single thing you said to be worthy of the term "argument".

I realise you're probably just parrotting off what your parents or your pastor or whothehellever have beat into you all your life, but I'd like to think that sooner or later you will start to think for yourself.

Mike's post above summed it up pretty well, so I'll see you later.

How is America breeding these idiots? sigh...

all praise to ..army for trying...

Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been,
Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene;
As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be,
So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.

I don't think anyone in this thread has a remotely-enough open mind to examine both sides of the question. Yes, I have a Bio degree and teach evolution, but the teaching of evolution changes every year. The fact that the movie may be cheap and one-sided has no effect on what evolution has occurred and what hasn't, but it sure pushes people's buttons.

The problem is that it's even being addressed as a "question" that can have two sides. This gives laypeople (not to mention less-than-laypeople!) the impression that an actual scientific controversy exists when in fact there is none: It is a social controversy.

Of course the intricacies of evolutionary theory are up for debate and will continue to be ironed out. This has nothing to do with the fact that evolution occurs, as I'm sure you realise.

I agree that the scientific community has no controversy over evolution, but I'm no longer going to mention things around here as long as people believe that things are all in black and white, whether they be "scientists" or "religious yahoos". Later.

Personally, I don't have a problem with kids being exposed to religious theory, even in school, but I don't think it belongs in the science classroom. Science requires that you be able to test theories based on observable phenomena, and with Creationism and parts of ID, you can't.

I mean if God wants to come to schools and do some demostrations, I'll totally change my stance on this, but for now, I think even He'd agree with me.

Wow I thought the movie was scary stupid and then I read the thread and found that it actually has sparked some debate in it's favor. It takes one person like this to make me almost give up on humanity again but luckily some intelligent and reasonable meta critics redeem mankind (for now.)
We can talk about the movie but this kind of silly debate shouldn't even be taking place on these forums.

And IndieFolkExperimentalLover, do your homework before you make a fool of yourself and lose all credibility and the respect of this community.

It's a little late for this. Wink

Also, I have a problem with religion (or Intelligent Design... which is essentially the same concept) being a) taught as fact rather than philosophy and b) being taught to kids who don't even understand the inherently unreliable nature of its source. In my opinion it should be saved for college/high school when a healthy amount of skepticism has been cultivated and the students won't just blindly accept everything they're told. Like Mr. IFEL up there.

Exactly. I don't think creationist or intelligent design theory should be surpressed or 'expelled' altogether, but it belongs in the religion classroom, not the science classroom.

Nailed it. This is a 'black and white issue'. Evolution is a fact. Creationism or I.D. is a fallacy to support a certain community, afraid and reactionary.

I have read an almost blow by blow account of the film and found it to be extraordinarily gutless, mendacious and sinister.

Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been,

That's odd, my reply to mark f was deleted. Hopefully not by mark f himself.

The gist of my reply was essentially that it's misleading to categorize the two sides of the argument equally; that it's a false dicothomy because they're not so much black and white as black and oblong. The two sides are approaching the argument with different parameters. Saying that people see the issue as black and white, carries the implication that the truth lies somewhere in between, when in fact it does not.

mark f is espousing open-mindedness, which is a positive trait, except in the face of overwhelming proof. When something has been proved, open-mindedness is no longer a positive, but more like ungrounded superstition.

I should add that I don't think mark f is taking sides or anything like that. I don't know what his personal views are, I'm just responding to his implication that 'both sides are as bad as each other'.
