This has been going on forever at General Music as "Recent CD Purchases", so I think it's time we jumped in. I just bought DVDs of two George Stevens' classics, "Gunga Din" and "I Remember Mama".

What have you guys been buying or have received as Holiday presents?

I don't really purchase that many DVDs, I prefer just to rent movies and ONLY if the movie is exceptional then buy it. Recently though, I have dropped my standards and bought a couple average movies such as "Spiderman 2," "Elf," and "Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban." I suppose my next purchase will be "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind."

By the way, excellent idea Mark.

I really wouldn't put money towards that movie yet. I LOVE it, don't misenterpret but I really think that film is destined for something better. A very special edition is soon to arrive,I am sure, with patience I will wait.

Goodfellas
The Untouchables
The Shawshank Redemption
Rounders

I'm a sucker for those special editions.

oh, and I bought Exorcist III as well (partly because I think it is underrated... mostly because it was really cheap).

edit: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2-Disc Collector's Edition

i feel bad for all those who bought it when it first came out. Frowner

Ahah! Thank you, you know I haven't seen this available anywhere. Those damn Best Buy stores only advertise the cheapies. Seriously, I tried to find Rushmore (Critereon) and they had NO copies of it...they only had the dumb one disk dvd edition. I've started myself a little Critereon shelf.

For those of you who are into buying Criterion or more-specialized types of DVDs and don't know about them, let me post a link to DVD Planet. Their superstore (aka The Candy Store) is only two miles from my house. Every day, they sell all DVDs for 25% off, except if you pre-order or get them the first week, they're 30% off, and all Criterions are 35% off. You can type in "Criterion" in the left-corner DVD Search Box to see everything available. You get free shipping and handling for orders over $25. Check them out if you're so inclined.

Thank the genius who discovered Ebay, Amazon and WalMart.com. Without them, I'd never have a DVD collection. Recently, I've acquired (some of them you'll see a trend):

Before Sunset
Before Sunrise
Great Expectations (Paltrow/Hawke)
Snow Falling on Cedars
Reality Bites
Mary Shelley's: Frankenstein
Benny and Joon
Restoration
Major League
An American in Paris
La Dolce Vida
Three Coins in a Fountain
Roman Holiday

For gifts (none of which were on my list to acquire, but I can't complain):

Dirty Dancing
Romeo and Juliet
Mona Lisa Smile

I think that's about it for the past 2 months

Mark, I am definately going to check out DVD Planet now. The Criterion Collection has so many films that I want to own, but the prices dissuade me often. At 35% off and free shipping, how could I not? Hope they'll deliver to Canada!

I checked out their shipping policies, and apparently it's a $6 charge to Canada plus $2 for each item. Sorry, bro, but maybe you can save up and get as many as possible at one time. Remember, I only live two miles from the store.

I've done a test and I can send one DVD to Canada for $1.35! More in one shipment wouldn't cost that much more. So if shipping screws the pooch, I might be able to help out.

Well I got Quantum Leap season 1 for Christmas and then bought Knight Rider Season 1 and ROTK EE with some Christmas money. I also recently picked up A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall, Little Women and Crouching Tiger at Target. The first two were $9.99 and the last two were $7.50 each. I believe that sale is over though. But, for anyone who lives in the south and can find a Hastings store, I highly recommend checking out their dvd section. I built my dvd collection there when I was going to college in Arkansas. You can trade in 3 dvds for a brand new one. They have a great used section, and if you find the right movies, you can buy three of theirs dirt cheap and then trade them back in for a new one (thanks Jakal). Check out their website www.hastings.com for locations. By the way Nickel, not to rub it in, but a couple years ago, I got the Rushmore Criterion and High Fidelity in a two pack at Kmart for $25 bucks. To bad they don't have good stuff like that anymore. I also highly recommend The Rock Criterion, if only for the outtakes of Ed Harris. Man, does he get pissed. Its great.

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back.

Only the man upstairs knows how much I spend on DVDs. Which is why I like hearing about cheap DVDs! Thanks.

The two most recent purchases Tae Guk Ki: Brotherhood of War and Before Sunset.

I was able to nab Before Sunset for 6.99 Canadian. Thats like under 5 dollars American!

I bought The Incredibles last week. It's a two disk DVD and it was on sale for 15.99.

p.s.What was that movie with Mike Myers and Gwenith Paltrow? Im guessing the old one is better then the new one right? I remember that disturbing commerical about that movie and I've hated it ever since.

What brought that on? Are you talking about View From the Top? That wasn't a remake. Oh, and it goes without saying that I bought The Incredibles last week.

I found Standing in the Shadows of Motown last week for $5.50. It's a pretty cool dvd, the second disk of bonus material is pretty interesting, the jam session with the funk brothers is worth the cost alone.
