These are not just bad movies, but disapointing or below par considering the calibre of director and cast:

"Hook" Spielberg, Hoffman
"Eyes Wide Shit" Kubrick, Cruise, Kidman
"Stepford Wives" (2004) Frank Oz, Kidman
"Gangs of New York" Scorcese, Daniel Day Lewis
"Godfather III" Copolla, Pacino

On Godfather III, it really was a FAMILY AFFAIR, Sophia is like the Jar Jar binks of Godfather.

Ocean's Twelve.

I can't remember who directed it, but it certainly had an all-star cast. It was still quite a lemon of a movie, which is rather disappointing, considering that Ocean's Eleven was actually a pretty solid action flick, with good writing to spare.

Planet of the Apes is a good example I think. It had Tim Burton, my all-time favourite director, a man who can actually create movie-magic. It had a good cast: Mark Wahlberg (terribly miscast), Helena Bonham Carter (who was actually pretty good), Paul Giamatti (who easily stole the show), Tim Roth and many others. the film's nonsensical plot couldn't be saved by all these stars.

Ok the jury is out on whether Oliver Stone can be considered a good director. I know he's made a few great films, but he's made a lot more stinkers.

But say he is, then what about about "U-Turn"? Directed by Stone and starring Sean Pean this is probably the nadir of both their careers. Sean Penn "finishing himself off" in the bushes after Jennifer Lopez won't put out has to be one of the ugliest moments in cinematic history.

I'll probably start with George Stevens' "The Greatest Story Ever Told". Stevens is one of my favorite directors. He did "Giant", "Shane", "A Place in the Sun", "Gunga Din", "I Remember Mama", "The Talk of the Town", "The More the Merrier", "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Swing Time", among others. The cast of "Greatest" includes Max von Sydow (as Christ), Charlton Heston, Jose Ferrer, Angela Lansbury, Sidney Poitier, Van Heflin, Claude Rains, Telly Savalas, Shelley Winters, Ed Wynn, John Wayne and dozens of others. It's not that it's so horrible, but when you consider what it could have been, it's upsetting to sit through some of the scenes where it seems that rigor mortis has set into several cast members and the camera. It has some beautiful scenes, but the slow pace takes a heavy toll.

There's also Jack with Robin Williams, it was directed by Francis Ford Copolla!!! And I mean, it's very cheesy.
OR there's also Alien Resurection, it had J.p. jeunet as director (AMelie, A Very Long Engagement), it had a good cast and stuff but was pretty preposterous.

"Hook" are you kidding me? I love that movie. I'm not so sure about the directing though, it might not have been as spectacular as say, "Saving Private Ryan" or "E.T." but the movie is still a favorite of mine.

Here's a quote for no apparent reason-

Actually, I agree, I love Hook. Dustin Hoffmann was brilliant, the sets and effects were cool and There are some really good scenes. Granted, it was hard accepting Robin Williams as Peter Pan but once you get past that, it's a good movie.

I agree that Dustin Hoffman was brilliant (when is he not?) but I seem to remember the rest of the movie being a total dog's breakfast. Anyway I didn't say that I thought it was terrible, just that it was disappointing for a Spielberg movie.

I dunno, I mean, if you give me the choice between watching Hook or The Lost World I'd choose Hook instantly.
Hook was perhaps not Spielberg's best film but it was better than the Lost World for example, or the Terminal for that matter. Cool

I know some will disagree with me, but I'm going to say "I Heart Huckabees" by David O. Russell. Some people liked it, but I thought it was a steaming pile.

I would have to disagree with some of the movies listed here in that along with a good director and cast, I felt that several of these movies were very good including:

Eyes Wide Shut - was an amazing, hard-edged movie that made my eyes become wide open.

Stepford Wives - was as good as it could get considering the original movie, though perhaps the very ending death scene was a bit much.

Oceans 12 - was an ok movie and the cast seemed to have fun with it (at least it seemed to come across more than most movies) and it was a sequel.

Alexander - was one of my favorite movies of the year when it came out and I enjoyed it more than Troy. It was much more real and intense emotionally dealing in more sensitive topics.

Alien Resurrection - again was my second favorite of the four Alien movies. I considered well done and better for the nature of science fiction as opposed to action-thriller in space. The Riply-Alien dichotomy was intriguing.

I can agree however with a number of movies that really faltered such as:

Hook - it just played out strangely as if in comparison to the original source, it somehow lost the playful, innocence and became something more serious and too disconnected.

Gangs of New York - while I didn't see it, the results at the box office and critical reviews didn't meet expectations regardless of how good the movie was.

Planet of the Apes (remake) - it's almost impossible to not compare it to the original and the changes - talking humans really changed the dynamics of the movie losing something in the process and the movie lost some of the intriguing freshness and interplay between man and apes. Of course the ending could never be topped as a brilliant twist. [Perhaps nobody could really have done a reasonable remake no matter what - it was probably a mistake to try].

"Ishtar" wins hands down! Dustin Hoffman, and Warren Beaty (actor/director). How can two of the great actors of my generation create a film so bad? To this day I cannot understand why they released it. When they saw the finished product did they not see the same boring, mindless film we watched in the theater? Everyone is allowed a bad film here and there, but this one almost made me want to see them banded from further movie-making.

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

Ishtar was actually written and directed by Elaine May. I realize it always ranks as a fiasco, but I kinda like it, especially the songs. No, I'm not telling anybody to run out and watch it, and I haven't seen it for years, but I don't think it deserves to have such a horrible reputation. I agree that Bob and Bing did it much better. Wink
