It was a reasonably entertaining show, and the list changed quite dramatically, except for a few films. Here she blows!!

It's an immaculate list for the most part.

However I would replace the following:
Spartacus
Easy Rider
Platoon
Sixth Sense
Pulp Fiction

with these:
Badlands
Alien
Brazil
Breaking Away
Blue Velvet

...just for starters....I didn't even get to the rest of the alphabet.

Spartacus has aged badly, The Sixth Sense is an awful piece of hack work, Easy Rider is dull and trite, Platoon is fine, but there are better war films, such as The Thin Red Line, and Pulp Fiction is, I repeat, derivative, dull, self-satisfied, juvenile and poorly directed.

There's me 2 cents. Big Grin

Try this one. I'm not sure what mark's list was all about, but this one at least has the 100 movies featured last night. You can even buy 'em!

I don't know Ishter. I think you are too harsh.

Seriously though, The Sixth Sense "an awful piece of hack work?" How can you be serious when you say something like that? All of those movies you mentioned are great, top films in my eyes.

As for the list, I liked it quite a bit. But I have been meaning to ask; I think the second Godfather film is better than the first, those anyone else think this also?

Oh, come on guys! You know our favorite oceanic pine overcoat is an Aussie. Everything is backwards in his world. Good is bad, up is down, & nothing is as it seems! It's our world's equivalent of Bizarro World Razzer!

Looking at the list, I can see there are quite a few old films on it. Which was expected, but is it just me, or is the acting in the older movies just a tad hammy? If we saw a movie today where people acted like they did back in the day, wouldn't it be deemed a horrible feat of cinema? I know some people had a problem with "Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow" because the acting was "terrible", but they acted just like the people of that age performed!

I am curious to see "Citizen Kane" if only to actually see the whole movie. However, I know how it ends because of 'The Real Ghostbusters' cartoon that used to come on. They had a story of a ghost that was looking for Rosebud & in the end, it was a sled! I also noticed they showed a sled being burned with the name across the top, so that is the direction the movie goes in! Stupid movie spoiling, piece a --!

I know Tabuno (& surprisingly, Ishmael) is gonna have a problem with me saying this, but "Titanic" does NOT belong on that list! Yes, yes, it made a ton of cash & everyone has seen it, but the love story is just plain ridiculous! My whole problem with this movie is Jack only knew this girl a week! Sorry, I don't care how much I loved her when I first saw her, we're either both getting on the floaty thing or we're both staying in the water! Plus, Billy Zane can be an intimidating figure, but he looked a little too dandy to seem like much of a threat. The only fantastic part of the film is when that flippin' ship sinks! Now, that's good cinema, & the scene is long enough to be a whole movie all on its own!

What's with all the musicals? "Singin' in the Rain", "The Sound of Music", "The Wizard of Oz" & such. **SHUDDER** All those & they didn't have "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986)? The best musical EVER made! The story of a lonely orphan who has a crush on a girl that could never be his. Or could she?

As for movies I've liked &/or seen on the list, there's:
"Toy Story"
"Do the Right Thing"
"Pulp Fiction"
"The Sixth Sense"
"Titanic"
"Forrest Gump"
"The Silence of the Lambs"
"The Shawshank Redemption"
"Saving Private Ryan"
"A Clockwork Orange"
"Tootsie"
"Unforgiven"
"Raiders of the Lost Ark"
"Rocky"
"Jaws"
"Lord of the Rings: THe Fellowship of the Ring"
"Bonnie & Clyde"
"The Sound of Music"
"Snow White & the Seven Dwarves"
"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
"To Kill a Mockingbird"
"E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial"
"2001: A Space Odyssey"
"Psycho"
"Star Wars"
"The Wizard of Oz"

The ones I haven't seen that I really want to are:
"Ben Hur"
"Blade Runner"
"The French Connection"
"Goodfellas"
"Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid"
"The Deer Hunter"
"Rear Window"
"Shane"
"Dr. Strangelove"
"The Godfather, Part II"
"Vertigo"
"Schindler's List"
"Raging Bull"
"Casablanca"
"The Godfather"
"Citizen Kane"

Yep, it's mostly older movies. The acting is just so "off", I don't know how to explain it really. You can just tell they're acting in older flicks. It kinda takes me outta the moment. And no, I haven't seen any of "The Godfather" movies. I'm not really into older "gangster" flicks, but I've been wanting to at least check 'em out at some point. Just to see what all the fuss is about.

Not a bad list at all, really. Just like everybody else, I'd like to see a few movies traded for others, but at least this list has a giant ape, a hungry great white shark, dinosaurs, Obi-Wan Kenobi, a whip-bearing archeologist, & hobbits Big Grin! Now, all we have to do is somehow get a stoner bowler & his veteran friend, Neo, & some cavemen flying harrier jets Wink! I mean, they're cavemen & they're flying harrier jets! What's not to like about that?!

By the way, here's Roger Ebert's take on the list & you can even see the reviews he's done for most of 'em. AFI 100: 'Kane' still number one

I prefer Godfather II as well, but I think we're in the minority.

As for the rest of the list, I can't really argue with the films, but I guess I would change the order. I think Raging Bull is a little high at #4. I would prefer Lawrence of Arabia in that spot. As far as films I would have removed, I'd go with Titanic, Sixth Sense, and maybe Forrest Gump.

Let's see.

As far as older movies having hammy acting, I guess you have to say that there's hammy acting in every era. Just look at what passes as the big money-making comedies nowadays. You can't tell me they don't have hammy acting. Regarding this specific list, I'll take the acting in It Happened One Night, The Grapes of Wrath and Citizen Kane against anything you want to compare them too from the 2000s. It's all subjective, but I suggest the viewing of more "older movies" might change some minds, but then again, I remember people here complaining that many older movies have dated and are real howlers, even though I completely disagree. I guess it depends on your mind set.

I know many people who can't stand musicals, but I love all the musicals on the list. I just wish that my favorite, Cabaret, was higher, but hopefully it will be in 10 more years.

As far as the Godfather movies go, I rate the first a slight step above the second, although Godfather II does comment on the first and enriches it. As a stand-alone film though, don't try to watch II without having seen the first one. Cool

That's a good point. There's no way I could say I like II better without having seen the first.

Ha ha. Are you saying that my alternates are bad?

And, equally, do you really think The Sixth Sense is a good film?? Repeated shots, lazy framing, inability to develop emotional contexts, and cliches galore...I put Badlands just for example against Shamalama anytinme, anyday. Smiler

hey monkey magic...how can you shudder at The Wizard of Oz!!! It's Oz!!! It's flying monkeys!!
Remind not to bring up musicals when I visit ya ha ha Big Grin

The shudder was mostly for "The Sound of Music"**SHUDDER** See?! It happened again Eeker! I was forced to watch that movie in a number of music classes in grade school, & then I get a roommate who flippin' loved it! He would rent it once a month & watch it all three days he had before taking it back. Oh, was it awful! I finally bought it for him at Christmas time. I figured if he's gonna watch it THAT much, he might as well own it instead of humiliating himself by openly renting it out in public.

I find musicals annoying. Not so much in "The Wizard of Oz", I did enjoy it as a kid & I plan on buying it at some point for my own children, but all that singing & dancing in other musicals sucks to me. The only time it really worked was in "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986). I think it worked for me because it was funny as all get out. Plus, Audrey II was AWESOME! I have yet to encounter a musical I've enjoyed as much as that one. I did kinda like "Hairspray", but seeing a man in drag disgusts me. Now they have John Travolta playing the tranny/mom part in the remake. EWWWWWWW!

Confused One of the biggest shocks for me with the new AFI list is the absence of Dr. Zhivago (1965) which remains among my top five movies of all time. This sweeping epic and haunting sound track is eternal incorporating universal, eternal themes of war, revolution, love, and betrayal. AFI voters really made for me an incredible and bewildering decisions when this great movie couldn't even make it to the top 100.

It was on the original list in 1998 at #39, but this time, it's gone. On the other hand, The General wasn't on the list in 1998, and now it's #18, and The Searchers moved up from #96 to #12.

If my link in the first post doesn't work for you, you can go to www.afi.com to check the history of their 10+ different polls.

P.S. You can join the AFI and vote in the polls for cheap enough if you want to try to make a difference.

But seriously, check out PopMatters.com for a cool list of 50 must own DVD's. You'll be pleasantly surprised to see a certain stoner bowler, ha ha.

Well, as long as you ain't wearin make-up & really trying to look like a woman, I guess that's okay Big Grin. Now, I'm not so disgusted. I did have a friend who walked around in a dress & heels for an entire day, & it wasn't Halloween! Somehow he still picked up a couple a girls. NOW that's a mack Wink!

I notice "Battle Royale" is on the list. Wasn't that one of your personal faves? I also like the movie poster for "The Big Lebowski". Why doesn't the DVD have that picture? (Don't worry, I'm not expectin' an answer, it's a rhetorical question.)

Yes! Battle Royale is a big fave with me. I musta seen that movie at least...twice... Smiler

So whats with all these movie lists in June? Is it so the critics are freed up for end of year best ofs? Either way, it makes for fun reading, and will hopefully turn peeps onto good fillums.
