I've been watching previews for the bigger summer movies coming out, and thought I'd take a crack at predicting some metascores...
Poseidon - 60. The original "Poseidon Adventure" wasn't exactly a classic, but it was a reasonably good disaster movie. Wolfgang Peterson hasn't done anything of note since In The Line Of Fire, yet I'm predicting the good cast (Kurt Russell and others) will save this from complete mediocrity.
Superman - 65. Bryan Singer is one of the few people in recent years to make a decent comic book movie, and this one does feature Kevin Spacey as a villain. It's still an unnecessary sequel but my gut tells me it will be passable.
The DaVinci Code - 70. Can't possibly live up to the hype, but looks promising. I'm guessing it will be typical of Ron Howard: safe and competent, with flashes of something greater here and there.
The Omen - 45. Yet another s****y horror remake to blight a reasonably good original. Don't Look Now is in for the same treatment...
Clerks II - 55. I liked "Clerks" and "Chasing Amy" alright, but I have to admit I think Kevin Smith is one lucky, overrated guy. This sequel will not be charmingly low-budget, or indie-fresh the way the original was...and it will likely contain many of the in-jokes that, for me at least, were borderline-lame the first time and only get worse. Fans will probably flock to this, but I'm guessing critics will make him answer for this one, without completely trashing it.
How do you think Nacho Libre will do with Jack Black? I think it's going to do even better than Napoleon because there are very few funny films coming out this summer and everyone knows the ND guys are involved.
