The Conversation (w/ Hackman) Eraserhead Un Chien Andalou Nosferatu (1922) Coven (of American Movie fame--then again, even Netflix doesn't have this one) In Cold Blood (with the success of Capote they might be stocking this one now, haven't checked) Fail-Safe Walkabout Don't Look Now The Wicker Man The Haunting (1963) Naked Lunch Seconds
I just went to the local Blockbuster looking for a movie. This is not some special "kiosk" Blockbuster or anything; it's a full-sized store with several dozen shelves.
After searching for several minutes, I finally had to ask the clerk to help me find the movie...there was no way they wouldn't carry this one. But alas, the guy checked in the computer, and sure enough, they didn't carry it.
The movie was Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. Even the employee was like, "Oh my God, are you f*****g kidding me?!?"
I'm hoping it's part of some lame strategy to get people to sign up for Blockbuster online...because if it's simply that store deciding they didn't need to carry that one, well, that's just sad.
I'm a member of Netflix, but occasionally the urge strikes to watch something *now*, in which case I go to Blockbuster.
Maybe where you are you have a host of quality rental places to choose from, but where I live there are only three common ones: Blockbuster, Bongo Video and Family Video. There are a few mom'n pop places with a great, esoteric independent/documentary selection, but they're a half-hour drive from me. If Blockbuster is the McDonald's of rental, then I don't know what Family Video is...it's a Midwestern chain with maybe 40 stores or something. Most of their big new releases are only available in Full Frame (whatever that says to you); they stock a few Widescreen copies, but they're *always* out. They have back room for the pornos, etc., etc.
Blockbuster is actually my best option by far, for anything mainstream or new release. The store near me even carries newer documentaries like Deliver Us From Evil, and other surprisingly uncommon independent stuff.
Yeh, commontone, thanks for the feedback. My experience is with Australian Blockbuster stores, and they are just awful.
They rarely have anything beyond the mainstream, and they won't carry a number of 'edgier' titles.
Perhaps the US stores are better for range. Back home in Oz, I will go along to independent shops who stock the rare and strange. Last time I was in Blockbuster, I was filled with so much rage, I had to leave running before I strangled someone!1
No Close Encounters...sheesh!

Really, I think my Blockbuster is pretty good. And when I need to pick up the Malick or Almodovar or Antonioni or Kurosawa or Palahi flicks they don't carry -- that is, most (or all) of them -- I just go downtown to a little rental shop that carries nearly every movie I've ever had the desire to see.

I just rented Mostly Martha (1992) yesterday at Blockbuster when I read the credits of No Reservations (2007) that had a sneak preview this past Saturday so I could compare the German language original version. Yes they had it in stock, so Blockbuster is probably one for two so far.
