I'm thinking of movies that aren't as much based on a story; but rather on images and ideas. Although they are hypnotic and memorable to me, others may find them boring.

"Picnic at Hanging Rock" and "Walkabout" - Both are coming of age stories dealing with repression. Neither really put you on the edge of your seat. Instead they just slowly find places to stick in your mind.

"The 400 Blows" by Troffant, I believe, I saw a year ago. It still comes back to me sometimes, the image of a boy gradually driven to run away by the circumstances in his life.

"Punch-Drunk Love" with Adam Sandler is another movie dealing with repressed emotions. The scene where he breaks the mirrors is one of my favorites.

"Open Water" moves at a snail's pace, but is so intimate. I saw the pain and beauty in the relationship of this husband and wife.

"Au hasard Balthazar" is story of a donkey's life. The film follows around a donkey and the people around him from his birth to his death. He is mistreated or loved by different people. Roger Ebert's review was maybe as powerful as the movie for me.

I find "Picnic at Hanging Rock" one of the perfect movies to recommend. Besides the repression aspect, there's the mystery of the story, the fantasy element(s), how it translated from the novel and the belief that it was based on a true event, though it wasn't (from what I've read).

Back to topic- I loved "No Such Thing", Hal Hartley's twisted tale of myth & media staring Sarah Polley, Robert Burke, Helen Mirren and Julie Christie. This film recieved some pretty terrible reviews. I can understand that, it's not easy to like though I re-watch it often. To it's defense, some reviews basically didn't like that it wasn't Beauty-And-Beast romantic or they didn't like the attacks on the media. I don't care, I love it for just those very reasons.
